New chairman for building control body

The body that represents the interests of private sector building control consultants, the Association of Consultant Approved Inspectors (ACAI), has appointed Nigel Barr as its new chairman.
Nigel Barr, managing director of BBS Building Control Ltd, has over 38 years’ experience working within building control and has been in the Approved Inspector sector for the past 25 years. He takes on the role of ACAI chairman from Paul Timmins.
Previously Nigel has been president of the Institute of Building Control in 1995, notably the first president from the private sector, as well as a member of BSI and CIRIA drafting committees and council member of the fire safety organisation BAFE.
Nigel says:
“At a time when developers and architects are faced with the double whammy of intense financial pressures and increasing regulations, approved inspectors play a pivotal role in helping clients with faster, more cost-effective and responsible regulatory compliance. In building control the private sector has led the way in innovation and customer service for more than 25 years. My priorities for the ACAI are to continue this reputation for excellence and to boost the association’s influence and representation so that Government, the industry and the public can measure the value that we bring. We will also continue to put the spotlight on uncompetitive practices by local authorities and will lobby for more accountability wherever we find building control bodies which are failing to report on their compliance with industry performance standards.”
The ACAI was formed in 1996 to increase awareness and understanding of private sector building control as a commercial, professional and cost-effective alternative to local authority building control. Today it has about 45 members who collectively represent 95% of all independent building control work.
