24th August 2009

The Association of Consultant Approved Inspectors has confirmed its support for the Donaghy report: 'One Death is Too Many - Inquiry into the Underlying Causes of Construction Fatal Accidents'.

Paul Timmins, chairman of the ACAI said:

"Approved Inspectors expect to fulfil their legal duty of care to assist their clients achieve good health and safety on site, but we can also see a true benefit in closer liaison with health and safety professionals to improve the standards further.

"The Donaghy report has been a useful review into how and why so many deaths and serious injuries are occuring in the UK construction industry. We will work closely with the HSE and others on the points that it raises.

"We also call for greater integration of the regulatory regimes around health and safety and building control. Many Approved Inspectors already provide a combined service for both building control and health and safety CDM Regulations advice, so we know this approach works, is welcomed by clients and can help to improve standards."
