About ACAI

The Association of Consultant Approved Inspectors (ACAI) was formed in 1996 to increase awareness and understanding of private sector building control as a commercial, professional and cost-effective alternative to local authority inspectors.  Today it has about 40 members who collectively represent 95% of all independent building control work.

The ACAI has built strong relationships with key stakeholders in central government, government agencies and the building industry over many years and is regarded as the voice of independent building control.

ACAI members are often called on to contribute to research conducted by Communities & Local Government and other Government bodies.

We lobby for better regulation. For example, the ACAI is taking an active role in the current debate on the future of building control, representing the interests of Approved Inspectors in the private sector.

It has joined forces with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Association of Building Engineers (ABE), Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and Local Authority Building Control (LABC) to create the Building Control Alliance, which gives the industry a united voice on the Government’s reform proposals.
